The Devil: Bondage
The Devil corresponds to the planet Saturn, the zodiac Capricorn, the pagan sabbat Yule, the element Salt, the Metal correspondence Lead, the Alchemical process of Putrefaction. The Incantation for this card is Attachment and the Kabbalah correspondence is Ayin, the Archangel is Cassiel, the Planetary Lucifuge.
The Devil here reflects the terrible gravity of a will that has become its own prison through the slow accumulation of what it refused to release. Saturn and Capricorn lock the structures of limitation into place with the cold patience of a force that does not need to hurry because time itself is its instrument, while Yule marks the deepest darkness of the year where what has been bound remains bound until the light returns to reveal it. Salt crystallizes attachment into its most permanent and unyielding form, the residue of desire hardened by repetition into something that feels indistinguishable from necessity. Lead reflects the crushing weight of chains that are no longer even recognized as chains, the heaviness of a bondage so thoroughly internalized that it presents itself as identity. Through Putrefaction, the illusion of necessity begins its inevitable decay, the slow and uncomfortable dissolution of what the self believed it could not survive without.
Rooted in Ayin, the eye and the path of raw perception that sees through the surface of things into the driving force beneath all compulsion, and governed by Cassiel under the deeper current of Lucifuge, this card reveals attachment as the shadow face of desire unexamined. It is the moment of recognition that the chains were never locked, that what holds the soul in place has always been the refusal to look directly at the cost of what it chose to keep.
