The Noaidi’s – Shamans of Northern Europe

This piece is inspired by the northern European Indigenous people, the Sámi. The name of the piece, Noaidi, refers to Sámi shamans who use drums and chanting as ritual instruments for divination and for communication with spirits and ancestors. This is what you see at the center of the work, a central figure chanting, depicted through tubes of light emanating from the shaman’s mouth area. This is further illustrated by the symbols on the drum, abstractly vibrating into existence as the shaman beats it.

Also present in the work is a reindeer surrounded by the northern lights. The reindeer is a deeply important and revered animal to the Sámi. It was not only used for herding, but also for clothing, utilitarian objects, and art. At the bottom center of the composition, you will find a mandala-like form. This is an abstracted design based on an authentic piece of Sámi jewelry.

Throughout the work, including the color palette, you will find other important principles that echo Sámi culture, all contributing to and shaping who they are today.
